Local Sightseeing

The Leh-Nubra-Pangong Lake circuit in Ladakh, India, is a mesmerizing journey that encapsulates the raw beauty and cultural richness of the Himalayas. This route, spanning stark deserts, lush valleys, and serene lakes, offers a unique blend of adventure, natural splendor, and spiritual tranquility.

Leh: The Gateway to Ladakh

Leh, the capital of the union territory of Ladakh, serves as the starting point for this journey. Perched at an altitude of around 11,500 feet, Leh is a hub for travelers seeking to explore the high-altitude landscapes of the Himalayas. The town itself is a blend of old-world charm and modern amenities, with its bustling markets, ancient monasteries, and the iconic Leh Palace standing testament to its rich history. The Shanti Stupa, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains, is a must-visit spot. Acclimatization in Leh is crucial before embarking on the journey to higher altitudes.

Nubra Valley: The Desert in the Sky

From Leh, the journey to Nubra Valley takes travelers over the Khardung La pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world at an elevation of 17,582 feet. The descent into Nubra Valley reveals a landscape that is starkly different from the rugged terrain of Leh. Known as the “Valley of Flowers,” Nubra is a high-altitude cold desert with sand dunes, lush greenery, and the meandering Shyok and Nubra rivers. The Diskit Monastery, the largest and oldest in Nubra, houses a 32-meter Maitreya Buddha statue that overlooks the valley. Another highlight is the Bactrian camels, which offer unique rides across the sand dunes of Hunder.

Pangong Lake: A Turquoise Gem

From Nubra, the journey to Pangong Lake involves traversing the Shyok River route or the more adventurous Wari La pass. Pangong Lake, situated at an altitude of about 14,270 feet, is a 134-kilometer long endorheic lake that extends from India to Tibet. Its crystal-clear blue waters, which change hues with the sun, create a surreal and captivating scene against the backdrop of barren mountains. The lake's serenity and beauty have made it a popular location for filmmakers, with its most notable appearance in the Bollywood film "3 Idiots." Visitors can camp by the lake, experiencing the tranquility and starry skies that add to the ethereal experience.

Returning to Leh

The journey back to Leh from Pangong Lake usually takes travelers via the Chang La pass, another high-altitude road that presents stunning views of the Himalayas. This leg of the journey offers a chance to reflect on the diverse landscapes and cultures encountered. The return to Leh marks the end of a circuit that encapsulates the essence of Ladakh: a land of high passes, tranquil lakes, and an indomitable spirit of adventure.
